Yes, it’s important to continue seeing your general dentist regularly while undergoing orthodontic treatment with braces or Invisalign. Your dentist will monitor your overall oral health, perform routine cleanings, and check for issues like cavities or gum disease.

Braces and aligners can make it more challenging to clean your teeth properly, so professional cleanings help prevent plaque buildup and ensure your smile stays healthy throughout your treatment. We recommend visiting your dentist every six months or as advised.

You will need to take special care to avoid any foods that could damage your new appliances.

Foods to avoid with braces:

Chewy foods - bagels, licorice/toffees

Crunchy foods - popcorn, ice

Sticky foods - caramel sweets

Hard foods - hard sweets, ice

Foods that require biting into - corn on the cob,   apples, carrots

Juices, fizzy &  sports drinks

While wearing braces, it’s important to brush your teeth at least twice a day, but ideally after every meal and snack to prevent plaque buildup around the brackets and wires. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush or an electric toothbrush, along with fluoride toothpaste, to thoroughly clean all surfaces of your teeth and braces.

Flossing should be done at least once a day using floss threaders, orthodontic floss to clean between the teeth and around the braces. Maintaining good oral hygiene helps prevent cavities, gum disease, and staining during your orthodontic treatment.
