Braces
Our practice offers a variety of braces, types and styles to choose from
Metal Fixed Braces
Fixed braces - often called "train track" braces are one of the most common and reliable ways to straighten teeth. This system uses small metal brackets attached to each tooth, connected by a flexible wire that gently guides your teeth into better alignment over time.
Today’s metal braces are much smaller and more discreet than those used in the past. For younger patients, coloured bands can be added for a fun, personalised touch.
To learn more about metal braces and explore the other treatments options available, we can advise you during a consultation.
Ceramic Fixed braces
Ceramic braces work in the same way as metal braces but use brackets made from a clear ceramic material which is almost invisible when bonded to the tooth, making these braces much less noticeable.
Win Lingual Braces
WIN Lingual Braces are a type of fixed orthodontic appliance that are completely hidden from view because they are fitted to the inside (tongue side) of your teeth - unlike traditional braces, which are placed on the outside.
This makes them an excellent choice for patients who want a truly invisible way to straighten their teeth.
Custom-made for each patient using advanced technology, WIN braces offer the same precise and effective tooth movement as traditional braces, but with the added benefit of complete discretion. They are particularly popular among adults and professionals who wish to keep their orthodontic treatment private.
Because they are tailored to the shape of your teeth, WIN braces also offer improved comfort compared to older lingual systems.
Looking after your Braces - what to expect
Eating with braces
Don’t worry - you’ll be back to enjoying your favourite snacks soon! But for now, there are certain foods you should avoid to prevent damage to your braces:
- Chewy foods: bagels, licorice
- Crunchy foods: popcorn, ice
- Sticky foods: toffee, caramel
- Hard foods: nuts, hard sweets
- Foods you bite into: apples, raw carrots, corn on the cob
Try cutting harder foods into small pieces and chewing carefully with your back teeth.
Soreness after Braces are Fitted
It’s normal to feel some tenderness or soreness in your teeth and mouth when braces are first fitted. This usually settles within a few days.
To ease discomfort, try rinsing with warm salt water (1 teaspoon of salt in a glass of lukewarm water).
If needed, over-the-counter pain relief can help.
Lips, cheeks, and the tongue may also feel irritated - use the orthodontic wax provided to cover any sharp areas.
If you run out of wax, just let us know.
Loose teeth
It’s normal to feel some tenderness or soreness in your teeth and mouth when braces are first fitted. This usually settles within a few days.
To ease discomfort, try rinsing with warm salt water (1 teaspoon of salt in a glass of lukewarm water). If needed, over-the-counter pain relief can help.

Loose Wires or Brackets
If a wire or bracket comes loose, contact us as soon as possible. Save any broken pieces and bring them with you. For minor issues, you can:
- Gently push a wire back into place using the back of a spoon or a pencil eraser.
- Cover any sharp ends with wax to relieve irritation.
- If necessary, carefully trim a long wire with nail clippers - only if you feel confident doing so.
We’re always here to help, so if you're unsure, give us a call and we’ll guide you.
Playing sports with braces
Good news - braces won’t stop you from playing sports! We do recommend wearing a mouthguard to protect your teeth and your appliance. Speak to us if you need a gumshield during treatment.
If you suffer a blow to the mouth, check for any damage and let us know right away. In the meantime, rinse with warm salt water and use wax for comfort if needed.
Caring for your Braces and Appliances
To keep your treatment on track, it's essential to take care of all your appliances.
Damaged braces or forgetting to wear elastics, retainers, or other recommended gear can delay progress. Consistency is key to a great result!
